Emmerdale’s Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) is rotting in prison for a crime she didn’t commit, and it looked like there was no chance her circumstances might change, until now.

Things are looking pretty bleak for the farmer, with the evidence against her being stronger than husband Cain’s love of a cold pint. A dead body wrapped in her blanket, smothered in her DNA, on her land? Looks like Moira is going down for a long time.

For a brief second, it looked like Bear’s (Joshua Richards) confession to Ray Walters’ (Joe Absolom) death might do the trick and set her free, but it did absolutely nothing to help her case. And worse, Moira was left crushed to learn Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) had put pressure on the vulnerable old man.

But Moira is more resilient than that. Though her hope might have dwindled, she’s been waiting for the next thing to cling on to.

Cain is trying to keep everything together; managing the farm, managing their two boys, managing his own declining health condition. He’s not doing the best job, but he is just about coping.

But then there’s an emergency at the farm which not only adds to his long list of worries, he has no idea how to solve it. A tree falls on a barn and traps a flock of sheep.

Cain can’t risk losing the livestock and calls on help from the locals, and gets a surprise when Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) turns up to help.

Somehow, they get the job done, and Cain’s face cracks into the first smile it’s seen in ages. He takes his joy to prison to share with his incarcerated wife to show she can rely on him while she’s banged up.

But as Moira approaches, Cain realises something is wrong – she is sporting a painful black eye from a prison fight.

While for most, this would be a terrible sign, and even Cain is a little worried, for Moira, it’s a sign she’s settling in. She’s scrappy and knows how to hold her own.

In a weird way, they’ve both had a recent success. With her husband’s face finally showing a rare smidgen of joy, Moira rediscovers her hope. Perhaps she can fight this, after all?
