Coronation Street boss breaks silence on ‘unmissable’ Emmerdale crossover

Ever since soap land was rocked to its core with the announcement that worlds will collide, when both Coronation Street and Emmerdale collide to create the first ever soap crossover episode, fans have been clamouring for any information over what will happen when the two ITV soaps come together.

With filming having recently begun on the super episode, which is due to herald the debut of both Emmerdale and Corrie’s new transmission patterns, being dubbed the soap ‘power hour’, fans have been teased with the promise of an ambitious stunt, which will leave a permanent mark on both shows.

Teasing the upcoming game-changer, Iain MacLeod, ITV’s Executive Producer for Continuing Drama, previously teased:

‘It’s beyond exciting that filming is under way on Corriedale. There is a massive buzz around both the Leeds and Manchester sites and the images coming out of the shoot are utterly spectacular.

‘And that’s before we’ve even got to all the brilliant transpennine interactions between characters from the different shows!’ As a soap fan myself, I think my head is going to explode when the episode airs next year. It will be mind-blowing, historical and unmissable.’

Corrie boss, Kate Brooks has opened up further on the upcoming crossover.

‘We’ve got a brilliant director. The script’s brilliant. The actors are loving it, because it’s so different and unique from what they’ve ever done before. I’ve been on set a few times. The mood and the camaraderie is really infectious. People are loving working with people they have not worked with before.

‘It’s just dead exciting. I just can’t help but imagine what my mum’s gonna be like watching this episode. She’ll be so beside herself, because, as a soap fan, the idea of sitting down watching your two favourite shows with all your favourite characters interact in this massive, unmissable piece of telly, it’s just amazing.

‘Even if I didn’t work in soap I’d be so excited for this because it’s just a soap fan’s dream. I think what we’ve done really well is make sure that the episode encapsulates what makes both shows unique, but also that universal appeal that soap is brilliant telly and it’s soaptastic.

‘So I think that those combinations are going to be a real treat for fans. Everyone’s worked so, so hard on this as well behind the scenes. Obviously, the cast have been amazing, brilliant.

‘But behind the scenes, people have worked really hard. It’s been quite a feat logistically to get everything in the right place. So I just think, as a testament to how hard and how passionate all the people are behind the scenes, from schedulers to crew and DOPs and directors and ADs, it is just a testament to the fact that they love what they do, and everyone has put their heart and soul into it.’

While ITV’s soap bosses have been keeping incredibly tight-lipped about what fans can expect, the stars of both shows have been slightly more forthcoming with the tea.

Last week, Danny Miller, Emmerdale’s Aaron Dingle took to his Instagram stories and shared a video, telling fans that he had finished a night shoot at 5am, before taking his daughter to dance class at 10am.

Is it a coincidence that the Corriedale promo seems to feature after-dark scenes?

It couldn’t possibly tie in to the recent spotting of a wanted poster showing John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) in an episode of Corrie, could it? Perhaps we’re reaching?

He isn’t the only actor who may have spilled a little tea, either…

After receiving two trophies at the Inside Soap Awards, Vicky Myers, who plays Lisa Swain said on carrying the hefty prizes: ‘I’m not going to let them go all night or on the train back to Leeds tomorrow!’

…and well know what’s filmed in Leeds, right?

Social media was set alight when eagle-eyed fans spotted Alison King and Kate Ford, who play Carla Connor and Tracy Barlow, respectively, out and about in Leeds, and were left wondering how they’d fit into the enormous soap event.

On the other hand, though, we have one confirmed cast member. According to The Sun, Jack P Shepherd, who plays David Platt has been more explicit than his co-stars, telling them: ‘we get to work with all the Emmerdale lot shortly, it’s exciting. There’s only a few of us in it and luckily I’m one of them,’
