Shocking Emmerdale exit amid sword attack in early ITVX release
The following article contains spoilers from an episode of Emmerdale that hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX.
Kev Townsend (Chris Coghill) has left Emmerdale with a broken heart.
The character arrived earlier this year and was revealed to be Robert Sugden’s (Ryan Hawley) secret husband. The two characters got married in prison, when Kev was behind bars for armed robbery, while Robert was doing time for murder.
The relationship Robert and Kev had was complex, and the love they felt for each other was different to the love Robert has for Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller).
Robert and Kev’s marriage was never going to work on the outside, because Robert is meant to be with Aaron. In recent weeks, Robert decided to bite the bullet and dump Kev, but failed to tell him that it was because of his ex.
Yesterday, everything changed as Kev discovered that Robert and Aaron were seeing each other. They have been doing this for a while but in secret, and made a hapless error by kissing in the pub garden.
His anger and hurt growing over the betrayal, Kev decided he didn’t have anything to lose in today’s episode, and headed to Aaron’s flat for revenge.
He broke in and sat on the sofa with a sword in his hand, waiting for Aaron and Robert to emerge from the bedroom.
There wasn’t really any particular end goal for Kev, he just wanted to scare Robert and Aaron because he was hurt. When Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) arrived, he threatened to kill the trio but ultimately, he really wasn’t going to do anything.
While Liam hid in the corner, terrified of Kev flailing the sword around, Aaron and Robert were busy trying to get him to calm down.

While Robert was somewhat fearful of what Kev could do, Aaron wasn’t. He made it clear that he wasn’t scared of Kev, and hit the nail on the head by describing the life he used to live before he was sent to prison.
As this was going on, DS Carter had arrived in the village in search of Caleb Miligan (William Ash). She had received a tip off that drugs were being moved through his depot business, but Caleb wasn’t at work when they arrived.
As a result of Aaron living in the flat about Caleb’s house, Carter rang the doorbell, which left Kev convinced that one of the three men had called the police for him.

With Carter unable to find Caleb, she soon left, which gave Liam the chance to tell Kev that he could leave now as a free man with money in his pocket.
It’s been clear to Kev that Robert doesn’t want to be with him, but he had spent a long time refusing to accept it.
It was today’s episode that saw his mindset change, as he realised that with Robert’s priorities changing, and Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler) urging him not to act on his connection with Lewis Barton (Bradley Riches), there wasn’t anything left for him in the village now.

Just before Kev departed, he had one final conversation with Lewis.
Lewis had grown to like Kev, but his opinion of him changed when he learnt that he had robbed the pawn shop. Kev didn’t want to tarnish the life Lewis had created in the village, and walked away after telling him that he’s a wrong’un, and those type of people usually end up hurting someone.
It’s been a short journey for Kev Townsend but with bosses reportedly eager to get Chris
